The Paraguayans who manufacture Cocido in California
They have spent years living in the United States far from their families, their country, their language and their traditions. This was how they created Kojoi, the Paraguayan tea (known as “cocido”) that wants to conquer the American market.
Challenging paradigms, this group of five Paraguayans undertook two years ago the artisan production of "cocido" in the county of Sonoma, northern California, well known for its beautiful vineyards and cultural diversity
Ultima Hora, talked with the creators of YMateina (WhyMateina), a company dedicated to produce derivatives of yerba mate. The team: Jessica Apuril, Elba Sánchez, Arturo Díaz, Rubén Román and Pedro Caballero. After finishing school 19 years ago, they decided to emigrate abroad in search of a better future, as many compatriots do.
Talking about this great project it is necessary to emphasize a friendship of decades, since Arturo Diaz and Pedro Caballero are childhood friends , they went to San Pablo School in Asunción.
An idea born in a garage.
From the garage of Pedro's house, place known as "the laboratory", these friends tell how it was to start from scratch in the United States of America.
"Living abroad is not easy, especially in a place with a different language and so far from our land. Over time we adapted to the culture and, like every Paraguayan, we did all kinds of work to earn our daily bread from cleaning cinemas, organizing shoe warehouses, cutting grass, to managing large-scale branches in one of the largest banks in the United States, "recalls Arturo.
The desire to get ahead made the doors open gradually.
Like the Silicon Valley start-up business, after leaving work or at times when they could be with the family, they began designing the option of producing their own cocido and tereré in California, commented Pedro Caballero, president and CEO of the company.
Create a company in the USA it is not impossible mission
"The task was not easy, but after navigating the thousands of problems involved in designing a business according to the requirements of the American market, especially if it was production, we finally started to implement this dream," they explained.
"The mission is to create a Paraguayan product that can have acceptance in any social group, a natural product with healthy benefits and that serves as an alternative to coffee, and most important, with yerba mate brought from Paraguay," said the entrepreneurs.
Arturo and Pedro commented that finally, after thousands of hours of work and planning, in addition to long nights of work, other Paraguayans joined the venture and today is a pleasant reality.
YMateina is a company of Paraguayans for Paraguayans and for the rest of the world, they said. The name comes from the chemical component of mate (mateina, matein in English), which does not have much variation in the English language. To this they added the "Y", that is a common symbol in Silicon Valley and that to read it alone is pronounced like the interrogative "why", in Spanish means "why".
The same process was carried out to brand name the "cocido", since they have as a principle that all the products created will have names related to Paraguay, but at the same time they will be attractive for English speaking consumers. Kojoi is the name of the "mate cocido" in Guarani.
To be able to create the company they looked for an investor; resorted to business incubators, a common procedure in Silicon Valley, to invest in the manufacturing process, and the other part was solved with the savings of the owners.
The process of making the tea, called “cocido”, is still done artisanly, the herb is roasted and processed to produce instant "cocido" powder. According to Arturo, the yerba mate used for the kojoi is taken from Paraguay on each trip by some compatriots.
The demand for the product has increased in such a way that the company plans to industrialize it, for this they already have the machines to roast yerba and at the same time they are in negotiations for the export of the yerba mate, thus contributing with the yerbateras Paraguayans, mentioned the entrepreneurs.
The compatriots advanced that Kojoi is only one of the many products that they think to produce. "Our goal is to represent Paraguay with pride and to give the world a little piece of our land," they said.

US Approves Paraguayan Manufactured Good Imports
The Generalized System of Preference of the United States Government, approved the inclusion of travel articles manufactured in leather within the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) granted by that nation.
With this determination, Paraguayan firms are entitled to enter the products into the US market with zero tariff as of this month, according to the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay.
The inclusion of these products was possible through an alliance between the public and private sectors, as the national government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Paraguay in the United States of America, accompanied at all stages the application submitted by national industrialists to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) for the inclusion of such products within the tariff preference scheme.
They point out that this agreement will offer greater opportunity to work for artisans and artisans of scarce resources in Paraguay, because most of the articles benefited are hand-embossed in national vegetable leather.
"The export of local items to the US, in recent years, averaged US $ 3 million.
Through this commercial mechanism, Paraguay was able to position itself in more than 10 products such as sugar, sugarcane honey, non-coniferous wood, plywood, non-coniferous wood floors, woodwork for woodwork and maize, among others. " Says the report of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Juan is a boy from a wealthy family who doesn´t seem to find his path in life. This puzzles Ricardo, his father, who cannot stand seeing his son waste his time partying with friends. Tired of his father´s reprimands, Juan wants to run away from home but hasn´t got the money to provide for himself.
Emilio, a guy from his music band, persuades him that any blow can be struck to get what he wants, and so he “helps” Juan by introducing him to a group of drug dealers from the slums of the city. Unfortunately for Juan, things don´t go well and he ends up being beaten up. To everybody´s surprise, he escapes from his aggressors. Badly injured, he falls down next to a creek which drags the city´s garbage after each storm. He´s found there by a group of humble kids who pick up trash.
Immediately after this, Jose, their leader, decides to take him to the dispensary in his church, in charge of father Mario, who is also a doctor. Despite his serious condition, they keep him hidden in order to find out who´s behind this, given that the neighborhood where Mario does missionary work is well-known for its violence, perpetrated, not only by the dealers, but also by a corrupt police force in complicity with crime. Once Mario finds out that Juan´s father is Ricardo, a classmate who he hasn´t seen since the end of high school, he and Jose are more determined than ever to face many dangers in order to recover Juan and take him back home to his parents.
