The Embassy

Welcome to the Embassy of the Republic of Paraguay in the United States of America!

The Embassy represents the interests of the Paraguayan State and its nationals in the United States of America and is hierarchically linked to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In it, the Ambassador holds the highest authority of the Republic in the State to which he or she is accredited. By virtue of this, all agencies, representations and offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or other Paraguayan entities that operate in the United States are subordinated to him/her, with the exception of delegations or Permanent Representations in international organizations such as the United Nations or the Organization of American States. The Ambassador is also the direct superior of all mission personnel, as well as coordinator of the consular offices in Washington, D.C. (Chevy Chase, MD.) New York, Miami and Los Angeles.

Embassy officials may be diplomatic and consular staff, technical/administrative officers or contracted professionals. According to Paraguayan Law No. 6935/2022, the main responsibilities of officials in the former of these categories are the following:

a) To represent the Republic, defend its prestige and interests and carry out the negotiations entrusted to them by the Executive Branch, as appropriate to their hierarchical position;

b) To ensure, according to the functions they perform, the adequate protection of the rights and interests of the nationals of the Republic, within the limits established by international law and the legal system in force in the State in which they provide services;

c) To create awareness, contribute to promoting the high interests of the country in the State in which they perform their functions, and especially to encourage the development of commercial, economic and cultural relations;

d) To inform their hierarchical superiors on any matter of functional or general interest that comes to their attention;

e) To observe the indications formulated by their hierarchical superiors on issues related to the functions they fulfill, including those referring to their social conduct;

f) To assist Paraguayan nationals abroad, protect and defend their rights, whether these are natural or legal persons;

g) To conduct the international negotiations of the State and conclude treaties in coordination with other sectors of the public administration;

h) To coordinate and execute the national border policy;

i) To contribute to strengthening the image of the country abroad;

j) To promote and manage international cooperation for development;

k) To inform, guide and promote the participation of civil society in international affairs.

To perform these functions efficiently and achieve its goals and objectives, the Embassy of the Republic of Paraguay is organized into the following sections:

• Political and Legislative Affairs’ Office

• Cultural Office

• Administrative Office

• Office for Cooperation, Education and Human Rights.
